MOUNT HOOD — The Summit and Bend High alpine ski squads are accustomed to winning championship events.

Although not the state titles they were looking for, both programs bagged first-place finishes again on Friday — the Summit boys in the slalom and the Bend girls in the giant slalom — on the second and final day of the Oregon Interscholastic Ski Racing Association state championships at Mt. Hood Meadows Ski Resort.

Friday's efforts by both Storm and Lava Bear individuals, who grabbed several top-10 and a couple top-three finishes, bumped Summit to second place and Bend High to fourth in the overall boys and girls combined standings. Hood River Valley, which swept the girls slalom and boys GS titles on Thursday, also took the boys and the combined state titles, while Jesuit of Portland finished first overall among girls teams.

“We dug ourselves into a hole during Thursday's races but definitely had a better day today,” Lava Bears coach Greg Timm noted on Friday. “Thursday's conditions were much more challenging, which creates variability in some athletes.”

The Storm boys finished second in the state in team standings, while the Summit girls placed third. The Bend girls took fourth place as a team.

On the boys side, Summit's Christian Schuster raced to a second-place standing with combined slalom and GS run times (two runs per event) of 3 minutes, 9.32 seconds. For girls, the Lava Bears' Ciara Timm finished second in state standings with a total time of 3:25.86. Kate Puddy of Mountain View placed fourth, followed by Kori Coggin of Bend (sixth) and Angelina Mayer of Summit (10th).

According to Greg Timm, only 10 months ago it was uncertain whether Ciara, the coach's daughter, would ever ski for the Bend High team again. An equestrian, Ciara last spring fell from her horse, which stepped on her, seriously damaging her liver.

“We had a number of results to be proud of this year,” Greg Timm said. “But as a team, we underachieved. Both the boys and girls could not overcome losses on Thursday, yet both teams did the best they could do on (Friday).”

One of Bend's top skiers, Jared Doolan, was limited by a painful ankle injury that slowed him in both the slalom and GS events.

In Friday's races, Summit placed third in the girls GS, while Bend placed fifth in the boys slalom.

Schuster claimed the No. 1 spot in the boys slalom event in a combined time of 1:16.08, and Jordan Schiemer, also of Summit, slid into second in 1:16.23.

By one one-hundredth of a second, Timm skied to second place in the girls giant slalom in 1:53.93, followed by Puddy in fourth (1:55.18), Coggin in eighth (1:56.35) and Mayer in ninth place (1:58.31).

“I'm proud that we shook it off (on Friday) and really stepped up,” Greg Timm said. “We showed what we were truly capable of.”
