About 80 percent of the eclipse was visible from Bend with proper viewing glasses. Elsewhere in the U.S. and Asia, it appeared as a rare “ring of fire” eclipse, with the moon passing in front of the sun leaving only a golden ring around the edges.
Viewing parties were held in Reno, Nev., Oakland, Calif., and elsewhere. In Japan, “eclipse tours” were arranged at schools, parks and even on private airplanes.
The eclipse was the first of its kind to be visible from the continental United States since 1994.
