Panzy Carter Morris Hawes was born on March 9, 1923, in Bend, Oregon, to Frank Carter and Ethel Rief Carter. She was the third of 15 children of which 12 survived to adulthood. She was preceded in death by her parents and siblings, Charlette Sandman, Floyd Carter, Catherine Marvin, Leonard Carter, Robert Carter, Shirley Wright, Pauline Heifrich, Glen Carter and Roland, Joseph and Francis Carter. She leaves behind her brothers, Norman Carter of Beaverton, Oregon, Ronald Carter of Portland, Oregon and Ruby Erickson of Vancouver, Washington.
Panzy attended St. Francis Elementary and Bend High School. She married Hugh Morris in 1940 and lived for over 60 years at 702 NE Kearney Ave. in Bend. Hugh died in 1972 and Panzy remarried in 1976 to Atlee Hawes. Atlee survives her along with his children, Nancy, Lynn, Michael, Richard and Stephen. Panzy worked for American Telephone and Telegraph for 27 years and retired in 1977. She was involved in St. Francis parish and for many years assisted with Meals On Wheels for the elderly.
Viewing and a Rosary will be held on Friday, November 9, beginning at 6:00 p.m. at St. Francis (new church on 27th Street). A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, November 10, 2012, at 10 a.m. at the downtown historic St. Francis Catholic Church.
