Women settle claims in sexual abuse case

Published: November 18. 2012 4:00AM PST

EUGENE — Four women sexually abused by a former federal probation officer based in Eugene have been awarded financial settlements totaling more than $150,000.

The Register-Guard newspaper reports that the settlements resolve their negligence claims against the U.S. government for failing to protect them from Mark John Walker.

A federal judge has dismissed similar claims by five other probationers, saying they were filed too late. Under federal law, civil claims must be filed within two years of the alleged act.

Walker pleaded guilty last year to sexually abusing probationers between April 2005 and June 2009. He is serving a 10-year term.
