PORTLAND — Portland police say a 19-year veteran officer has been seriously injured by a falling tree in a training accident that’s believed to be related to the rain and wind storm that has pummeled much of Oregon.

Sgt. Pete Simpson says the officer was hurt Monday during all-terrain vehicle training. Simpson says the accident appears to have been weather-related.

The training was taking place at Hayden Island in the Columbia River.

The officer was taken to surgery. He was not immediately identified pending notification of relatives.
