• Former Storm player sets OSU dig record: Becky Defoe, a Bend home-schooled student who played sports at Summit and is now a junior at Oregon State, set the Beavers’ single-season dig record Tuesday in a three-set loss to USC. Defoe ended the night with 577 digs on the year, breaking her own record of 555 digs from the 2011 season. OSU fell to 4-15 in Pac-12 play with the three-set defeat to the Trojans. The Beavers end their season Friday with a home match against Oregon.

• D-III player scores 138 points: After a poor shooting weekend, Grinnell point guard Jack Taylor was given the green light to shoot his way out of a slump. It only took 108 shots for Taylor to make a mockery of the college basketball record books. Taylor scored 138 points to shatter the NCAA scoring record in Division III Grinnell’s 179-104 victory over Faith Baptist Bible on Tuesday night in Grinnell, Iowa. Taylor, a 5-foot-10, 170-pound sophomore from Black River Falls, Wis., made 27 of 71 3-point attempts, was 52 of 108 overall from the field and added seven free throws on 10 attempts in 36 minutes. Rio Grande’s Bevo Francis held the NCAA scoring record with 113 points against Hillsdale in 1954.

• Blue Jays hire Gibbons as manager again: Blue Jays President Paul Beeston couldn’t believe it when he learned the Blue Jays had the chance to land three star players from the Miami Marlins last week. He was equally surprised when his general manager told him he wanted to hire John Gibbons to manage the Blue Jays again. “They were back-to-back shockers," Beeston said with a laugh. General manager Alex Anthopoulos unexpectedly hired Gibbons as his new manager on Tuesday, a day after a megadeal with the Miami Marlins reinvigorated the roster and raised expectations the Blue Jays will make the playoffs for the first time since winning their second consecutive World Series in 1993. Gibbons managed Toronto from 2004-08 and had a 305-305 record.
• Kuroda, Yanks agree to deal: Hiroki Kuroda is staying with the New York Yankees, agreeing to a $15 million, one-year contract. A person familiar with the negotiations said the right-hander reached the agreement Tuesday. Kuroda, who turns 38 in February, was the Yankees’ most consistent pitcher during the regular season. He went 16-11, tying for the team lead in wins, and led New York with 33 starts and 219 2⁄3 innings.
Football
• Steelers sign WR Burress: Plaxico Burress is back with the Pittsburgh Steelers. Pittsburgh signed the 35-year-old wide receiver on Tuesday to provide depth at a position decimated by injuries. Antonio Brown has missed the past two games with a sprained ankle and Jerricho Cotchery fractured his ribs late in Sunday night’s 13-10 loss to the Baltimore Ravens. Burress spent his first five seasons in the NFL with the Steelers. He played for the New York Jets last year, catching 45 passes for 612 yards and eight touchdown receptions.
Hockey
• Labor talks expected today: This time, NHL owners and players are staying apart for just one day. Negotiations aimed at ended the league’s lockout are expected to resume today, following a brief break in talks. Before Monday night’s 90-minute session, it had been eight days since the sides got together. Whether the players’ association will bring a new complete proposal, as requested by the NHL on Monday, to the next round of talks remained uncertain.

• Former champ Camacho shot: Former champion boxer Hector “Macho" Camacho was seriously wounded Tuesday in a shooting outside the Puerto Rican capital of San Juan, and doctors and his spokesman said he was expected to survive. At least one gunman opened fire on the 50-year-old Camacho and another man as they sat in a car in the city of Bayamon. Camacho won super lightweight, lightweight and junior welterweight world titles in the 1980s.
