System and Station
I love it when not-exactly-huge bands are doing things on a grand scale. Take System and Station, for example. The Portland-based quartet has been at it for years, racking up album releases and tour-van miles and positive press blurbs, but never quite breaking through to the big time. And not for lack of worthy material. Fronted by powerful vocalist RFK Heise, System and Station's songs are epic collisions of soaring prog-pop, angular math-rock, and a little bit of arena-ready ambition, where no hook is too tall to conquer, even if it means straining to get there. In their promotional material, they cite Sunny Day Real Estate, Built to Spill and Shiner as influences. Shiner! Now that's cred-worthy. Anyway, System and Station will provide a nice change of pace at The Horned Hand on Saturday night, along with the opener, a new local rock group called One Block Away. Details at left.

Your Birthday
Local funk-rock-electro-pop-jam band Your Birthday has been scarce around the scene for a bit, but they'll be back on stage Saturday at Silver Moon Brewing to do some “rocking and also playing weird tron music and stuff," according to their Facebook page. (I love that.) Bonus: The show will double as a birthday bash for Jasmine Helsley and Tera Keller, the two women behind JAH Promotions, a local company that books the Moon. Fun times all around, eh?
