Summit squad to compete at state

Published: February 08. 2013 4:00AM PST

For the third year in a row, Bend’s Summit High School will be represented at the state cheerleading championships.

The Storm are one of more than 70 teams that will be at Portland’s Memorial Coliseum on Saturday for the 2013 Oregon School Activities Association cheer championships.

Members of the Summit team include senior co-captains Caroline Nyberg and Shae Himsworth, both of whom return from last year’s Storm squad, which competed in the 6A/5A Large Division (for teams with 13 to 20 members) and placed ninth out of 13 entries.

Other returning team members are junior Haylee Hansen and sophomores Morgan Stewart and Macey Connors. Rounding out the squad are seniors Natalie Robbins and Rachelle Burnham, sophomore Sydney Green, and freshmen Lauren Elliot-Mullens, Leia Watson, Mikaela Peters and Mikayla Spencer. The Storm are coached by Shaylynn Maier.

Summit is one of 12 teams entered in the 5A Small Division (12 members or fewer). That division also includes Crescent Valley, Dallas, Hood River Valley, Lebanon, Milwaukie/Milwaukie Academy of the Arts, North Eugene, Putnam, Silverton, Springfield, West Albany, and reigning champion Wilson of Portland.

Earlier this season, Summit participated in the required two qualifying competitions, placing second in its division in one event and third in the other.

Summit is the lone Central Oregon school represented in the daylong state event, in which 72 teams — nearly 1,000 cheerleaders in all — will compete for state titles in seven divisions. The Storm are scheduled to perform in the morning session, which begins at 9 o’clock.
