Malian city clear again

Published: February 12. 2013 4:00AM PST

A Malian boy climbs the wall of the police station Monday in Gao, northern Mali, one day after Mujao fighters engaged in a firefight with Malian forces.
French and Malian government forces have regained control of Gao after Islamic fighters fought a prolonged battle. Hospital officials and witnesses say three civilians died in the fighting Sunday.
Sunday’s brazen assault marked the first time the jihadists had penetrated the city of mud-walled buildings since they fled two weeks ago. The attack also showed the al-Qaida-linked militants’ intent to fight for control of Gao, which they had ruled for nearly 10 months.
