Cascade Winds to play varied program

Published: March 08. 2013 4:00AM PST

The Cascade Winds Symphonic Band will perform its winter concert at 2 p.m. Sunday in the Summit High School auditorium, 2855 N.W. Clearwater Drive, Bend.

Conductor Michael Gesme will lead the ensemble in a varied program featuring Louis Moreau Gottschalk’s “Souvenir de Porto Rico," Philip Sparke’s “Year of the Dragon" and Edwin Franco Goldman’s “On the Mall" march — and audience participation is required, according to the press release.

Wait. “Required?"

That’s right. Gesme explained via email: “We are doing a piece where the audience will be invited to whistle and “la" along (as in fa la la la la). It’s traditional with this particular march."

James Barnes’ “Beautiful Oregon," commissioned in 2006 for the Oregon Symphonic Band’s 20th anniversary, and “The Divine Comedy," Robert W. Smith’s take on Dante’s classic, will also be performed.

“You will hear and see the chains and feet being dragged by the souls in Purgatory, as well as the ethereal music of the spheres as Smith creates stunningly beautiful sounds of paradise," the concert’s press release quotes Gesme.

The concert is free, and tickets are not required.
