Bend dispute leads to woman stabbed Monday, say police

Published: March 19. 2013 2:06PM PST

A stabbing Monday afternoon on Northeast Sixth Street left a Bend woman injured and her cousin jailed, according to the Bend Police Department.

Amanda Penner, 20, was treated at St. Charles Medical Center, Bend, and released Monday, according to a hospital spokeswoman. Bend Police Sgt. Dan Ritchie reported Penner was left with a non-life-threatening stab wound to her chest after she intervened in a dispute between her cousin Matthew Sartain, 21, and another, unnamed man around 5:20 p.m. outside Juniper Terrace Apartments, 130 N.E. 6th St.

Sartain remains in the Deschutes County Jail awaiting arraignment this afternoon on charges of second-degree assault and unlawful use of a weapon. His bail is set at $55,000.

Police seized a knife at the scene.

The incident occurred across the street from Bend High School, but did not interfere with after-school activities there, according to Ritchie.
