Keeping these bees alive

A truck crash in March left a heap of beehives and their 5 million inhabitants on the side of the highway north of Madras. Local beekeeping volunteers have since stepped in to help out.

May 4, 2013 4:00 am

Keeping these bees alive, Marti Meyer and Stephen Harris, center, inspect a beehive panel as Al James, left, marks down one hive's condition and Erika Kightlinger, right, gets a panel from a hive ready last week at Bishop Farms, east of Bend.
The four, members of the Central Oregon Beekeepers Association, have helped check 221 boxes of bees that were recovered from the scene of an accident near Madras. The bees spent five days on U.S. Highway 97 before they were recovered and shipped to Bishop Farms.
Harris said he and his team saved most of the bees . On April 26, they just finished looking through every recovered hive to determine the health of the colonies. He is now working to place the bee colonies in local organic farms and gardens and with other beekeepers.

Late in March, a semi overturned on U. S. Highway 97 north of Madras. A small fire started — but was quickly extinguished — the driver was cited, and no one was hurt. What was most unusual, though, was the truck's cargo: hundreds of....MORE
