On Jan. 21, Les Stiles rounded up his staff and told them to be prepared to lose their jobs. If a tax levy fails at the polls in May, the Deschutes County Sheriff told them, 112 employees out of 171 on his staff will get a pink slip.
The sheriff's office's $18 million-plus budget would be gutted....
