The following recalls have been announced:

* About 290,000 EVAC-U8 and EVAC+ emergency escape smoke hoods, manufactured by Brookdale International Systems Inc., have been recalled because they could fail to work properly, exposing the user to harmful carbon monoxide that could compromise the ability to escape a fire. No injuries have been reported.

The smoke hoods include a transparent plastic hood that covers the user’s head and a canister that filters out toxic gases. ”EVAC+” or ”EVAC-U8” is printed on the canister.

They were sold through Web sites, safety product retailers, catalogs and travel stores from September 2000 through March 2006. For more information, call 866-823-4416 or visit www.evac safety.com or www.cpsc.gov.

* About 4,100 HP and Compaq Notebook computer batteries, imported by Hewlett-Packard Co., have been recalled because an internal failure can cause the battery to overheat and melt or char the plastic case, posing a burn and fire hazard.

HP has received 20 reports of batteries overheating, including two in the United States. One minor burn injury has been reported. Eleven cases of minor property damage were reported, including one in the United States.

The recalled batteries are a subset of those manufactured in early January 2005 and will have a bar code label starting with L3. Models that may contain a recalled battery include HP Pavilion models beginning with dv1 and ze2, HP Compaq models beginning with nx48 and Compaq Presario models beginning with V2 and M2.

The batteries were sold at national and regional computer and electronics stores, online stores and at hp.com and hpshop ping.com from January 2005 through December 2005. Consumers should stop using the batteries. For more information call 888-202-4320 or visit www. hp.com/support/Battery Replacement or www.cpsc.gov.
