Texas nips Nebraska in Big 12 title game

ARLINGTON, Texas — Nebraska had already stormed the field in celebration, having seemingly pulled off a huge upset in the Big 12 championship.
Except, upon further review, Texas still had one more second. And that was all the No. 3 Longhorns needed to completely change Nebraska’s emotions — and keep the 21st-ranked Cornhuskers from pulling off a BCS-changing shocker.
The clock showed :00 after Texas quarterback Colt McCoy scrambled and threw the ball out of bounds. But while Nebraska players threw up their arms in celebration and ran onto the field, officials waved their arms trying to gain control of what proved to be a premature celebration.
A second was put back on the clock after the play was reviewed. Hunter Lawrence then made a 46-yard field goal for a 13-12 Texas victory Saturday night.
Even after sacking McCoy nine times, intercepting three passes and holding Texas to a season-low 202 yards, the Cornhuskers (9-4) still couldn’t pull off the upset against Texas (13-0).
Also on Saturday:
No. 2 Alabama 32
No. 1 Florida 13
ATLANTA — Mark Ingram and Greg McElroy sliced up the fearsome Florida defense in Alabama’s win as Tim Tebow finally met his match, no matter how hard he tried to fire up his teammates. With an emphatic chomping of the Gators, the Crimson Tide again stands atop the Southeastern Conference and is just one win away from an even bigger title — it’s first national championship since 1992. Ingram, making a strong bid to claim the school’s first Heisman Trophy, rushed for 113 yards and three touchdowns. McElroy was 12 of 18 for 239 yards and a touchdown for Alabama (13-0), which moves on to Pasadena for the BCS championship game. Tebow and the Gators (12-1) will likely settle for the Sugar Bowl, denied a shot at their third national title in four years.
No. 5 Cincinnati 45
No. 14 Pittsburgh 44
PITTSBURGH — Tony Pike’s 29-yard touchdown pass to Armon Binns with 33 seconds remaining finished Cincinnati’s frantic comeback from a 21-point deficit and the Bearcats secured a BCS berth and their second consecutive Big East title. Mardy Gilyard had a 99-yard kickoff return only 70 seconds before halftime after Pitt had opened its 21-point lead, then he made it 31-24 with a 68-yard TD catch.
No. 6 Boise State 42
New Mexico State 7
BOISE, Idaho — Doug Martin had four touchdown runs and Boise State finished unbeaten for the second consecutive season. Kellen Moore threw for 272 yards and a score for the Broncos (13-0, 8-0 Western Athletic Conference), who finished 12-0 last year but were left out of the Bowl Championship Series.
No. 12 Georgia Tech 39
No. 25 Clemson 34
TAMPA, Fla. — Jonathan Dwyer’s 15-yard touchdown run with 1:20 remaining gave the Yellow Jackets a victory in the ACC championship game. Josh Nesbitt threw a 70-yard TD pass to DeMaryius Thomas and Scott Blair kicked a title game-record four field goals to help the Yellow Jackets (11-2) win the crown — Tech’s first since sharing it with Florida State in 1998. ACC player of the year C.J. Spiller rushed for 233 yards and four touchdowns for Clemson (8-5).
East Carolina 38
No. 18 Houston 32
GREENVILLE, N.C. — Dominique Lindsay and Giavanni Ruffin each ran for two touchdowns, while East Carolina’s defense hung in against Houston’s powerful offense in the Conference USA championship game. Dwayne Harris had a big day with 123 yards receiving and a 22-yard touchdown catch.
No. 24 West Virginia 24
Rutgers 21
PISCATAWAY, N.J. — Noel Devine and Ryan Clarke each ran for a touchdown and JT Thomas’ interception with 1:59 left sealed it for West Virginia (9-3, 5-2 Big East).
