Cowboys defeat Hawks

PRINEVILLE — Dillon Dees posted a double-double with 16 points and 15 rebounds and Crook County snapped a three-game losing streak Friday as the Cowboys played especially well after halftime to knock off La Pine 57-39 in nonleague boys basketball action.

Chance Sutfin and Preston Washechek added 11 points apiece, and Jacob Mahurin contributed nine for Crook County, which improved to 6-4 with the victory. The Cowboys had won five of their first six games of the season before dropping three in a row between Dec. 15 and 20. Crook County, which was tied with the Hawks 22-22 at halftime, outscored La Pine 35-17 after the break.

Cameron Kraft led the Hawks (6-7) with 13 points and three steals, but La Pine struggled shooting the ball against the Cowboys. The Hawks went just 16 of 52 from the field, including two of 17 from behind the three-point line.

Both teams resume play on Tuesday. Crook County continues Intermountain Hybrid play at Bend High, and La Pine hosts Madras in its final nonleague game of the season.

TURNER — The host Cougars shot almost 60 percent from the field against the White Buffaloes — they ended the night 32 of 55 from the field — in the nonleague rout. Madras senior Steele Haugen scored 25 points, but the Buffs could not stop Cascade. Cougars senior forward Orion Wright led all scorers with 31 points. Jhaylen Yeahquo added eight points for Madras, which fell to 8-5 overall. The White Buffaloes play at La Pine on Tuesday in another nonleague matchup.

MOLALLA — The Outlaws claimed a 10-5 lead at the end of the first quarter in their nonleague matchup against the Indians, but after being outscored 34-11 the rest of the way Sisters suffered its second straight loss. Ryan Pollard paced Sisters with seven points and Cole Moore added six, but the Outlaws hit just under 26 percent of their shots before falling to Molalla. Sisters (3-7) hosts Stayton on Tuesday.

REDMOND — The Tigers found themselves in a 31-4 hole at the half before dropping a Class 1A Big Sky League matchup to the Hawks, of Hood River. Isaac Bryant and Bryson Eells each scored four points for Central Christian (0-4 BSL, 1-6 overall), which hosts Arlington today at 2 p.m. in a league matchup.

Nate Carpenter finished with 11 points, five rebounds and five blocks, but the host Saints fell behind 18-5 after the first quarter en route to a Class 1A Mountain Valley League loss to the Loggers. Luke Phillis, Gabe Phillis and Tyler Dunn scored six points apiece for Trinity Lutheran (0-3 MVL, 1-9 overall), which visits Paisley today for a conference contest.

MOLALLA — Taylor Nieri recorded a game-high 22 points and hit 13 of her 15 free throws as the Outlaws picked up their second straight win to improve to 9-2 overall, their best 11-game start since Sisters opened the year 7-4 during the 2003-04 season. “We’re not an underdog this year,” Sisters coach Julianne Horner said. “They’re doing really well and playing strong. We’re ready for league play because these girls are really starting to kick into stride.” Savannah Spear scored 11 points, Cassidy Edwards finished with nine, and the Outlaws shot 30 of 43 from the line en route to the nonconference victory. Sisters hosts Stayton on Tuesday before opening up Sky-Em League action against La Pine on Friday.

TURNER — The White Buffaloes dropped their second straight game, this one at the hands of the Cougars, the No. 6 team in the OSAA Class 4A rankings. Madras led 22-20 at halftime. The Buffs (5-8) entertain La Pine on Tuesday before beginning Tri-Valley Conference play on Jan. 15 against North Marion.

REDMOND — With two players unable to get to the game and after an injury sidelined another, the Tigers played most of the third quarter and all of the fourth with four players, during which time the Hawks, of Hood River, outscored the Tigers 17-0 to pick up a Class 1A Big Sky League win. Desi Duke finished with five points for Central Christian (0-4 BSL, 2-8 overall), which led 9-8 before losing Kelsey Stealey to a knee injury. Central Christian is off until Tuesday, when the Tigers travel to Mitchell for a league contest.

Erin Cowan scored a team-high seven points, Abbey Carpenter finished with six points and six rebounds, but the host Saints, who led 15-14 at the half, were outscored 18-5 in the third quarter and 31-10 in the second half before falling to the Loggers in a Class 1A Mountain Valley League matchup. Megan Clift pulled down nine boards and dished out four assists for Trinity Lutheran (0-3 MVL, 4-6 overall), which continues conference action today at Paisley.
