Summit wins nordic races

HOODOO — With first-place finishes by Emily Hyde on the girls side and Skylar Kenna for the boys, Summit cruised to team wins in both the girls and boys races at the Oregon High School Nordic Organization’s Hoodoo skate race on Saturday afternoon.

The Storm girls, which finished atop the six-team field, saw Olivia Moehl (third) and Emma Su (fourth) also place in the top five.

Kira Smiley led Bend High, which took third as a team behind St. Mary’s Academy of Portland, with a fifth-place finish, while Redmond High’s Samantha Scholz took eighth.

For the boys, Alec Wiltz and Casey Shannon joined Kenna in the top three to help the Storm edge Bend High in the six-team overall standings. Jack Widmer and Peter Schwarz anchored the Lava Bears with fourth- and fifth-place showings, respectively.

Cougars sweep boys, girls

DIAMOND LAKE — Summit’s Alex Martin and Micaela Martin took individual wins in the girls and boys races, but it was Mountain View using three top-10 individual finishes that swept the team standings at the Oregon Interscholastic Ski Racing Association Jimmy John’s freestyle race. Sage Hassell was the high finisher for the Mountain View girls, finishing fourth, while Imran Wolfenden took second to lead the boys. The Cougars also won the boys and girls relay races.

PROSPECT — Megan Clift finished with a team-high nine points, eight rebounds and four assists, but the Saints could not overcome a 17-6 first-quarter deficit en route to a Class 1A Mountain Valley League loss, snapping a two-game winning streak. Rachel Spencer scored seven points for Trinity Lutheran (2-4 MVL, 6-7 overall), which hosts North Lake on Friday.

GILCHRIST — The Grizzles were handed their second straight Class 1A Mountain Valley League defeat, this one at the hands of the Timberwolves. No statistics were reported. Gilchrist (2-4 MVL, 4-7 overall) continues league play on Friday with a matchup against Hosanna Christian in Klamath Falls.

REDMOND — Despite 17 points from Desi Duke, the Tigers were dealt their third straight Class 1A Big Sky League loss to drop to 0-6 in conference play and 2-10 overall. Central Christian travels to Newberg on Thursday for a nonleague matchup against C.S. Lewis Academy.

SILVER LAKE — Karrah Davidson scored 11 points and Kelli Brown recorded four points and 13 rebounds for the Cowgirls, but Rogue Valley Adventist hit 15 free throws to hand North Lake its fifth Mountain Valley League defeat of the season. The Cowgirls (1-5 MVL, 3-7 overall) are at Trinity Lutheran of Bend on Friday.

PROSPECT — The Saints fell into a 14-2 hole at the end of the first quarter before dropping their Class 1A Mountain Valley League contest to the Cougars. Nate Carpenter logged the first triple-double in the Saints’ young history, finishing with 11 points, 14 rebounds and 10 blocks. Trinity Lutheran (0-6 MVL, 1-12 overall) entertains North Lake in a conference clash on Friday.

GILCHRIST — The Grizzlies saw their two-game winning streak come to an end after falling to the Timberwolves from Klamath Falls in a Class 1A Mountain Valley League matchup. No statistics were reported. Gilchrist (4-2 MVL, 7-5 overall) heads to Klamath Falls on Friday for a conference showdown against Hosanna Christian.

REDMOND — The Tigers were held scoreless in the first quarter, as the Rangers jumped out to a 19-point lead before taking the Class 1A Big Sky League contest. Bryson Eells scored four points to lead Central Christian (0-7 BSL, 1-10 overall), which visits C.S. Lewis Academy in Newberg on Thursday for a nonconference matchup.

WRESTLING

Madras sixth at Seaside

SEASIDE — Led by championship runs from Jared Dupont at 120 pounds and Miguel Vasquez at 132, Madras placed sixth out of 19 teams at the two-day Seaside Tournament. Lane McDonald (120 pounds) and Bryce Vincent (113) added a pair of runner-up finishes and Trevor Parsons (120) and Ethan Short (170) both finished fourth in their respective weight classes. “The boys stepped up,” White Buffaloes coach Ron Oliver said. “We didn’t wrestle real well at Pendleton (at the end of December), but we wrestled good at Riddle and we wrestled good here.” Miguel Sevilla also placed for Madras, taking sixth at 285. The Buffs host Molalla and Estacada on Thursday.

Bulldogs go 2-2 at Crater

CENTRAL POINT — Culver went 2-2 at the Crater dual-meet tournament and had three wrestlers place individually in its last competition before next week’s Oregon Wrestling Classic. The Bulldogs opened the tournament with a 37-36 win over Class 5A Eagle Point, getting a late pin by Mitch Adams at 195 pounds to clinch the victory. Culver lost matches to Eugene’s Churchill High (48-18) and Illinois Valley (36-31) before ending dual competition with a 36-31 win over a “renegade” team made up of wrestlers from various schools. Individuals wrestled for top honors after the dual meet. Jared Kasch took second at 120 pounds and Chandler Honeywell (113 pounds) and Adams (195) each placed third. Culver is off until the first day of the Oregon Wrestling Classic in Redmond on Friday.

Brewer paces Storm at Rumbaugh

CORVALLIS — Summit’s Tommy Brewer won two individual events and anchored a relay to victory in the 33rd Annual Rumbaugh High School Invitational at the Osborne Aquatic Center. Brewer finished first in the 100-yard breaststroke and the 200 freestyle. He teamed with John Hartmeier, Jeremy Moon and Michael Hartmeier to take the 400 free relay event, knocking off Sheldon of Eugene by five one-hundredths of a second. The Storm boys finished in fourth place in the 12-team field. Mackenzie Halligan paced the Summit girls team with two wins of her own, picking up first-place finishes in the 200 free and 500 free. Teammate Madi Brewer was second in the 200 free and 100 backstroke, and Halligan and Brewer, along with Ali Epple and Merritt Allen, were second in the 200 free relay and 400 free relay races. The Summit girls were third overall out of 12 squads. Bella Wiener led the Bend girls’ fifth-place effort with a runner-up finish in the 50 free. The Lava Bear boys were seventh behind Ben Brockman’s second-place finish in the 100 butterfly. Ridgeview’s Conor McCreary was eighth in the 50 free, and the Raven boys were 12th in the team standings. Casee Lantz was 11th in the 100 breast for the Ridgeview girls, who were also 12th.

Cougars post invite wins

HOOD RIVER — Kris Sagers and Justine Hanway won an individual event each and also posted third-place finishes to lead Mountain View in the 10-team The Dalles Invitational, which was staged in Hood River. Sagers took top honors in the boys 100-yard butterfly and third in the 200 individual medley, while Hanway won the girls 100 freestyle and finished third in the 500 free. Phoebe Weedman added a second-place result in the 200 free and a fourth-place effort in the 100 fly for the Cougar girls.
