Fundraising event on tap — The second annual Fleet Feet Freezer is slated for Feb. 2 in Bend. The fundraising event, an untimed 5-kilometer and 10-kilometer run, will begin at 8:30 a.m. and will start and finish at Fleet Feet Sports Bend on Galveston Avenue. Participation is free, though donations such as cash, checks and gift cards will be accepted and will go to a local family in financial need. Snow sports

Alpine skier receives grant — Bend’s Jordan Schweitzer has been awarded a $1,000 grant by the Far West Ski Association and the Mountain High Snowsports Club to assist with training and competition fees for the 2012-13 season. Schweitzer, 18, skis for the Mt. Bachelor Sports Education Foundation and is one of the top-ranked downhill and super-G skiers in her age group nationally. She was the J2 downhill national champion in 2010 and currently is trying to make the U.S. Ski Team.

Central Oregonians at nationals — With his men’s free sprint win on Tuesday, the Bend Endurance Academy’s Dakota Blackhorse-von Jess posted the best result by a Central Oregonian at the U.S. Cross Country Championships, but by no means the only one. Thirteen skiers with Central Oregon ties participated in the championships, which ran Jan. 2-8 in Midway, Utah. Mt. Bachelor Sports Education Foundation skier Emily Hyde advanced to the quarterfinals (top-24 finish) in the junior girls free sprint, and XC Oregon skier Santiago Ocariz was 22nd in the men’s 30-kilometer classic event. Bend resident Patrick Madden, who skies for Montana State University, placed 35th in the men’s 15K free race and MSU teammate Isabella Smith, also of Bend, finished 38th in the women’s free sprint. Other area participants were BEA’s Reitler Hodgert, Lars Ellefson and Ryan St. Clair, MBSEF’s Alec Wiltz, Skyler Kenna and Max Millslagle, and XC Oregon’s Matt Briggs and Ollie Burruss. BEA, MBSEF at qualifiers — A number of skiers from the Bend Endurance Academy and Mt. Bachelor Sports Education Foundation posted top finishes at the Race of the Methow, staged Jan. 5-6 in Winthrop, Wash. For the J2, J1 and OJ age divisions (ages 14-19), the event was the first of three Pacific Northwest Ski Association Junior National Qualifiers for the season. On the boys side, Leo Lukens led MBSEF with first-place finishes in the J2 boys free sprint and classic races, while Aiden Whitelaw won the J5 boys (ages 8-9) classic race. For BEA, Sam Biskup won the J3 boys free sprint and posted a runner-up result in the J3 boys classic race. For the MBSEF girls, Stella Hyde finished third and Olivia Moehl took fourth in the J4 girls (10-11) and J2 girls classic events, respectively. BEA’s Alexandra Heisler was second in the J3 girls (12-13) classic race and third in the sprint, while Vivian Hawkinson was second in both races among J1 girls, and Sierra Foster posted a runner-up finish in the OJ girls classic race. Soccer

Local club makes hire — The Bend-based Oregon Rush Soccer Club announced earlier this month that it has hired former University of Oregon coach Tara Erickson as technical director. Erickson, who spent the past eight seasons coaching the Ducks, was the Pac-10 Conference coach of the year in 2006, the same year she led Oregon to a runner-up conference finish. She also coached at Portland State University from 2001 to 2004 and was an assistant at Washington, where she had been an all-star midfielder, from 1996 to 1999. Erickson recruited former Rush players and Central Oregon high school stars Kristen Parr and Maryn Beutler, who just completed their freshman season of college soccer, to Eugene. Erickson is expected to start with the Rush on Feb. 1.
