Wagner edges Gold for U.S. title — Flawed, but still first. Ashley Wagner became the first woman since Michelle Kwan in 2005 to win back-to-back titles in the U.S. Figure Skating Championships, managing to hold off up-and-comer Gracie Gold despite three major mistakes Saturday night in Omaha, Neb. Wagner finished with 188.84 points, about two ahead of Gold. Gold won the free skate — posting the second-highest score ever at the U.S. meet, no less. But the 17-year-old had too much ground to make up after a dismal performance Thursday night in the short program left her in ninth place, more than 13 points behind Wagner. Earlier Saturday, Olympic silver medalists and 2011 world champions Meryl Davis and Charlie White won their fifth straight dance title. Marissa Castelli and Simon Shnapir won the pairs title.

Paris wins WCup downhill — Dominik Paris of Italy won the classic World Cup downhill in Kitzbuehel on Saturday, while American Ted Ligety missed a gate and failed to finish in Kitzbuehel, Austria. Paris came down the 2-mile Streif course in 1 minute, 57.56 seconds, followed by world downhill champion Erik Guay of Canada, 0.13 behind, and Hannes Reichelt of Austria in third. Paris, who also won in Bormio in December, and teammate Christof Innerhofer share four downhill victories this season, a record for the Italian team.

South win Senior Bowl — Florida State’s E.J. Manuel passed for a touchdown and rushed for another on the South’s first two drives in a 21-16 victory over the North in the Senior Bowl on Saturday in Mobile, Ala. Manuel and running backs Stepfan Taylor and Mike James combined to put the game for senior NFL prospects away on the final drive. Stanford’s Taylor carried five times for 32 yards and caught a 6-yard pass from Manuel.

Johnson defends UFC title — Demetrious Johnson successfully defended his flyweight title at UFC Chicago, unanimously outpointing John Dodson in front of a capacity crowd Saturday night at the United Center. Dodson, fighting at 125 pounds, landed left hands twice in the second round, sending Johnson to the ground. In the third round, Johnson had a takedown and landed a knee to get back in the fight.

Rockets reinstate White — The Houston Rockets have reinstated suspended forward Royce White and he’s due to report to the team’s developmental league affiliate on Feb. 11. The 6-foot-8 White, the 16th overall pick in the last draft, has been on the inactive list all season as he worked on an arrangement with the team to balance his acknowledged anxiety disorder with the demands of the NBA schedule. The Rockets said Saturday they had reached an agreement that “addresses the major issues” for the two sides.
