Martial arts
Central Oregonians fare well in competition — Four students from Victory Martial Arts in Bend all recorded top-four finishes in the United States Karate Alliance Pacific Regional Karate Championships, staged Jan. 19 in Palm Springs, Calif. In the adult kyu division (below black belt), Seth Mills, 33, won first place in weapons, and he also won in sparring and forms for beginner men ages 18-40. Ruby Guardia, 32, won first place in the beginner women ages 18-40 division in forms and sparring, and added a second-place result in weapons in the adult kyu division. Molly Trissel, 10, finished in second place in the ages 10-13 weapons division, and in second in sparring and forms in the ages 10-11 beginner division. Her mother, Stephanie Trissell, 46, took second place in sparring forms in the beginner women ages 18-40 division and third in weapons in the adult kyu division.
Track and field
Bend, Redmond high schoolers compete in Idaho: Bend’s Michael Wilson led a contingent of Bend and Redmond high school students at the high school portion of the Jacksons/New Balance Invitational, staged Saturday and Sunday in Nampa Idaho. Representing the Central Oregon Track Klub (CORK), Wilson won the boys 200 meters, finished second in the 400 and took eighth place in the 60. Also competing for CORK, the girls 800 relay team of Miranda Brown, Alexa Thomas, Olivia Singer and Megan Buzzas took second place, while Annie Sidor was third in the girls pole vault. For the Mountain View Track Club, Zoe Falk finished sixth in the girls 400 and Mitch Modin was eighth in the boys 400. Redmond High School’s Cody Simpson earned third place in the boys triple jump, while Kiersten Ochsner took ninth place in the girls 200. For results, see right.
