Beavers take record to 9-0 — Tyler Smith singled with one out in the 10th to send the Oregon State baseball team to a 2-1 win in front of 2,776 fans Friday night at Goss Stadium in Corvallis. Jake Rodriguez opened the final inning with a single and moved to second when Andy Peterson reached on a bunt single. Joey Jansen moved both over, paving the way for Smith’s game-winning RBI. It sent the Beavers to a perfect 9-0 record while Bryant dropped to 0-3-1 on the year. Oregon State and Bryant play a doubleheader today starting at 1:05 p.m.

Oregon falls to Cal State Fullerton — After taking a 1-1 tie through the fourth inning, Cal State Fullerton pulled away from Oregon with three runs in the fifth inning and four in the sixth to take an 8-2 victory in Fullerton, Calif., on Friday night. Brett Thomas, Ryon Healy and J.J. Altobelli each had doubles for the Ducks (7-2). The two teams battle again tonight at 6 o’clock before finishing their series on Sunday at noon.

Mushers line up for Iditarod — The world’s most famous sled dog race kicks off today with an 11-mile trot through Alaska’s largest city.Think of the short jaunt in Anchorage as the festival part of the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race. The real competition begins Sunday in Willow, 50 miles to the north. Sixty-six mushers and their dog teams are signed up for the 1,000-mile trek through unpredictable wilderness to the old gold rush town of Nome on Alaska’s western coast. Participants include 25-year-old defending champion Dallas Seavey, the youngest musher ever to win.

Flacco agrees to Ravens deal – Joe Flacco and the Baltimore Ravens reached a tentative agreement Friday on a new contract that would make the Super Bowl MVP the highest-paid player in NFL history. If the deal is finalized, the veteran quarterback would receive in excess of $120 million over six years, according to a person close to the negotiations who spoke on condition of anonymity because the contract has not yet been signed.

Martin takes pole — Mark Martin will be on the pole at Phoenix International Raceway for the second straight year after becoming the second-oldest pole-sitter in NASCAR history. Martin went around PIR’s mile oval at a speed of 138.075 mph on Friday to earn his 56th career pole a week after finishing third in the Daytona 500. Martin turned 54 in January, leaving him a few months short of beating Harry Gant as the oldest driver to win a Sprint Cup pole.

College Athletics

Saint Mary’s hit with violations — The NCAA has placed Saint Mary’s on four years’ probation for “failure to monitor its men’s basketball program,” reducing scholarships after it says the perennial mid-major power committed several recruiting violations. The NCAA Committee on Infractions also said Friday that Gaels coach Randy Bennett “acted unethically in his recruitment of international prospects” and “failed to promote an atmosphere for compliance.”

Ex-Montana QB acquitted – Jurors deliberated for about two hours Friday in Missoula, Mont., before acquitting a former University of Montana quarterback in a rape trial that has played out amid NCAA and federal investigations into how the city and school respond to rape allegations on campus. Jordan Johnson and his attorney David Paoli both cried after the verdict was announced, and cheers erupted from the area where Johnson’s family was sitting in the packed courtroom.
