A brief but hectic car chase ended in a neighborhood cul-de-sac in east Bend early Monday, and the fleeing driver was brought to heel by a police dog, according to law enforcement authorities.
Zlatan, a Belgian Malinois from the Bend Police Department, and his handler, Officer Erick Supplee, tracked Braxton M. Monson, 27, of Redmond, from the driveway on Blue Bush Court, where Deschutes County sheriff’s deputies said he abandoned his car and fled to a backyard just two blocks away.
The Sheriff’s Office reported taking three people into custody following a brief car chase that started at 2:52 a.m. on U.S. Highway 97.
Taken into custody were Monson, on outstanding warrants for probation and parole violations, along with suspicion of eluding a police officer, methamphetamine possession, manufacture and distribution, and reckless driving; Brandi Lyn Lindquist, 22, of Bend, on warrants for probation parole violations and suspicion of methamphetamine possession; and Benjamin R. Watson, 22, of Bend, on a warrant for parole violation.
None of the three were injured when the car crashed to a halt. Monson was not bitten by the police dog, according to sheriff’s deputies and Bend Police Lt. Chris Carney.
The chase veered onto Blue Bush Court off Empire Avenue at random, said sheriff’s Lt. Paul Garrison
“Typically, on these, they just drive to try and get away and they end up in a dead end,” Garrison said. “Obviously, they were unfamiliar with the area.”
The pursuit began when a sheriff’s patrol deputy signaled a white Chevrolet sedan to stop on the Bend Parkway, U.S. Highway 97, according to the Sheriff’s Office. The driver sped away and the deputy gave chase, following the Chevrolet southbound to the Butler Market Road offramp and back onto the Parkway northbound to Empire Avenue and then east, according to sheriff’s Sgt. Dan Bilyeu.
Meanwhile, two Oregon State Police troopers and a Bend Police officer joined the call. Reaching speeds of 80 mph, the pursuit entered Lava Ridges subdivision on Brookstone Lane and turned onto Blue Bush Court, authorities said.
The Chevrolet driver, identified by Bilyeu as Monson, crashed the car in a driveway and fled on foot; passengers Lindquist and Watson stayed with the car, according to the Sheriff’s Office. The crash resulted in minor property damage.
Zlatan found Monson hiding in a backyard on Marsh Orchard Drive, where he was arrested, according to Bilyeu’s report.
The parole and probation warrants are no-bail warrants.
Little or no traffic was interrupted, according to Bilyeu.
Garrison said officers have discretion about whether to continue a pursuit or curtail it, depending on several factors, including weather, traffic, the pursuit location and the behavior of the fleeing driver.
