Culver school bond moves forward

The Culver School Board unanimously agreed Monday to put a $9.75 million bond issue before voters in May.
The bond issue, recommended by a 21-member Facilities Advisory Committee, would pay for a number of repairs, upgrades and remodeling projects at district schools, as well as pay off $1.9 million in debt from a 2008 property purchase.
The bond issue would cost taxpayers in the Culver School District $2.63 for every $1,000 in assessed property value.
“That is Culver’s great challenge,” said Culver schools Superintendent Stefanie Garber. Taxpayers are currently not liable for any bond payments in the Culver district.
The last bond issue was paid off in June 2010, she said. She said that cost taxpayers $4.44 per $1,000 in assessed value.
From the anticipated May bond, $3 million would fund repairs and upgrades to security and other safety measures and upgrades to heating and electrical systems at older school buildings.
Another $4.85 million would pay for an elementary school wing, additional classroom space at the middle school and improvements at the high school. An additional $1.9 million would pay what’s owed on property bought in 2008 with an eye toward expanding the Culver campus.
“Our electrical capacity in the district is incredibly limited; we can add no more technology, no more things that add electricity,” Garber said. “We blow fuses all the time,”
Many buildings are not in compliance with the Americans With Disability Act, she said, and must be upgraded.
The next step comes Monday, when the School Board will have a formal vote to place the question on the May 21 ballot.
Culver has an elementary school that comprises four buildings, a middle school and a high school; all three share a cafeteria and a gym. The district has 662 students enrolled, Garber said.
The Facilities Advisory Committee was composed of school district employees, business representatives, Culver city staff and parents and grandparents of Culver students, according to a committee statement.
