A Madras man faces assault and driving-under-the-influence charges after a Sunday night car wreck involving a pedestrian.

Gerald Scharen, 52, was arrested by Oregon State Police troopers after a Madras reserve police officer observed his car strike a female pedestrian using the crosswalk at the intersection of Oak and Sixth streets east of U.S. Highway 97 in Madras.

The victim, 36-year-old Sara Ronning, also of Madras, was transported to St. Charles Medical Center, Bend, where she is listed in fair condition, according to hospital spokeswoman Kayley Mendenhall.

Scharen is being lodged at the Jefferson County Jail. He faces one count of second-degree assault and a charge for DUII, according to a news release from OSP.
