Plenty of posts on May ballot
Published 5:00 am Saturday, March 23, 2013
Local candidates have filed for a small army’s worth of positions available in May on school boards, park and recreation districts, fire protection districts, water districts and other unsung executors of the public’s business.
The Deschutes Public Library District has two positions open, one each in zones 2 and 3, at four years each, for example; the Bend, La Pine, Redmond and Sisters park and recreation districts all have positions available. In Bend, the park and recreation board will oversee an ambitious plan to improve city trails and other facilities and renovate the Colorado Avenue dam, funded mostly by a $29 million bond measure passed in November 2012.
Voters in the Bend-La Pine, Redmond and Sisters school districts will elect a total 13 board members; the Central Oregon Community College has five positions available. Bend-La Pine has also placed a $96 million general obligation bond on the ballot, a measure to raise money for two new schools and other improvements. Crook County School District puts a $33.5 million bond question before its voters. That measure aims to build and equip one new school, along with other improvements.
The last day to register to vote in time for the spring election is April 30. Ballots are mailed May 3 and must be returned by 8 p.m. May 21, Election Day. They must be mailed in time to reach the county clerk’s office; postmarks on the day do not count.
Water districts in Central Oregon and rural fire protection districts also have seats available.
The Deschutes County Rural Fire Protection District No. 2, with which a recent consultant’s report suggests the Bend Fire Department may consolidate as one option to reduce costs and improve service, has three positions available at four-year terms each.
The La Pine Rural Fire Protection District asks voters there to renew two local levies for five and 10 years for purchase of new equipment and further staffing. The levies would raise nearly $1 million.
The Deschutes County 911 Service District has put a levy before voters in the May election, one that would raise approximately $18 million over five years. The money would fund improvements to the 911 system.
Two sanitary districts, responsible for their respective sewer systems, have positions open: Oregon Water Wonderland Unit 2 and Starwood Sanitary District.
