PRINEVILLE — Madras handed Crook County its first loss of the season Saturday in the opening game of a nonconference softball doubleheader, but the Cowgirls rebounded in the second game to earn the home split.

In the early game, White Buffalo senior Jamie Moe went the distance, scattering six hits while striking out five to lead Madras to an 11-5 victory. Sarah Brown had a single and a triple for the Buffs (5-2 overall) and Moe added two doubles and a pair of RBIs. Jena Ovens led Crook County with a three-for-four performance at the plate, belting out two triples and a double.

The Cowgirls (4-1) won the second game 11-7 after scoring seven runs in the fifth inning. Karlee Myers-Hollis sparked Crook County’s big at-bat with a two-run single. Emily Benton pitched all seven innings for the Cowgirls in the late game, earning the victory while holding Madras to five hits.

SOFTBALL

La Pine sweeps Culver: CULVER — The Hawks picked up their first two wins of the season by defeating the Bulldogs 8-6 and 11-9 in a nonconference doubleheader. Culver, playing as the designated visitor, took a 3-1 lead after a three-run fourth inning, but La Pine (2-5) answered with three runs in the fourth and four in the fifth en route to a win in the first game. Keara Parrish recorded the game’s only extra-base hit — a double — at the plate, and on the mound she struck out six Bulldogs. In the second contest, the Hawks scored three times in the bottom of the first inning to even the score at 3-3, and added five more in the second to grab an 8-4 lead. The Bulldogs (1-5) came back with five runs in the top of the third, but with two runs in the fourth and another in the fifth, La Pine regained control and earned the victory. Kinsey Pinckney led the way for the Hawks by going three for four with three runs batted in.

Baseball

Outlaws claim championship: SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — With Justin Harrer and Nicky Blumm pitching one-hitters in their first starts of the season, Sisters shut out its two opponents — Corvallis’ Santiam Christian in the semifinals and Scottsdale Prep (Ariz.) in the championship — to win the Salt River Baseball Classic. Harrer threw seven innings in the semis, striking out 11 batters while walking just one, and drove in a run for the Outlaws, who defeated the Eagles 3-0. Sam Calarco and Alex Olivier each picked up an RBI, and Blumm went two for three. In the title game against Scottsdale Prep, a team Sisters lost to in its tournament opener on Thursday, the Outlaws (6-2) used a three-run third inning and seven more in the fourth to cruise to a 10-0 win in five innings. Blumm tallied two hits, and Eli Boettner smacked a three-run triple.

Madras takes two: MADRAS — The White Buffaloes swept their doubleheader against the Cowboys, 5-1 in the first game and 7-3 in the second, to improve to 5-1 on the season. Devon Wolfe pitched five innings for Madras in the opener, allowing zero earned runs while striking out nine batters. Bear Spino went two for three at the plate with a double and a run batted in to propel the Buffs to the win. Troy Benton paced Crook County, which had just three hits, with a double. In the second matchup, Andrew Fine, Alec McDonald and Spino each collected two hits, as Madras scored four runs in the third inning and added two more in the fourth to put the game out of reach and seal the Buffs’ fifth straight win. Crook County (1-2) was led by Jeff Turbitt, who doubled.

Ridgeview stays unbeaten: KEIZER — The Ravens defeated Junction City 5-3 and Hood River’s Horizon Christian 4-2 at the Volcanoes Spring Tournament to improve to 3-0.
