Dixie Stanton

Jan. 9, 1937 – Feb. 12, 2013

Dixie Lee Stanton of Bend, Oregon, passed away on February 12, 2013.

She was 76 years old. Dixie was the fourth child born to Emmett and Eva Thompson on January 9, 1937, in La Grande, Oregon. She married Gordon Gribling of Elgin, Oregon, and they had three sons, Gordon, Gregory, and Richard.

She lived and worked in Oregon her whole life, spending some time in Klamath Falls, Elgin and finally settling in Bend, where she was remarried to Kenneth Stanton. She worked at Jeld-Wen for many years and later volunteered at Bear Creek Elementary School for the ”Smart Reading Program”.

She spent the later years of her life on her farm in Alfalfa. She enjoyed working outside, building and mending fences, ”picking rocks”, creating contraptions to fix leaky roofs, or climbing up in trees to cut down mangled branches. She was not one to wait for help, especially if she could figure out how to do it herself. While she loved the quiet, she also enjoyed spending time with her family. She invited family over for many summer picnics and hot dog roasts and hosted traditional Christmas Eve parties. She always had a few extra gifts wrapped in case someone showed up with an unexpected guest.

Dixie was preceded in death by her parents, Emmett and Eva; her two sisters, Peggy Kennedy and Barbara Horn of Elgin; her youngest son, Richard of Redmond; and her grandson, Joseph of La Grande.

She is survived by her brother, Larry Thompson and his wife, and Betty; her sister, Toby and her husband, Chuck Williams both of Elgin; and her sons, Gordon Gribling and his wife, Roberta of Redmond, and Gregory Gribling and his wife, Julie of La Grande. Dixie had many grandchildren and great-grandchildren who survived her death. Donald and Margo Montagner and their children, Jedadiah and Lydia; Daniel and Mandalynn (Gribling) Marcus and their daughters, Leah and Lara; Gordon (Jake) and Tamara Gribling and their daughter, Maybe; Courtney Gribling; Sarah Gribling; Hanna Gribling; Haylie Gribling; Brian and Katie (Gribling) Vernon and their sons, Connor and Coen; Matthew Brown; and Kaylee Gribling; Emmett and Melissa Gribling and their sons Jacob and Matthew; Casey Gribling; and Anthony and Caitlin (Gribling) Berger and their children Amira, Jace and Remy.

Dixie’s family will hold a private Celebration of Life in Elgin, Oregon, in the spring.
