CLIMBING

Bend climbers shine — Eight climbers from Bend Endurance Academy posted top-three finishes in a USA Climbing Sport Climbing Season event staged March 16 at Rogue Rock Gym in Medford. The competition included youth teams and climbers from throughout the Pacific Northwest. Three BEA entries placed first in their class: Tristan Helmich (Male Youth A, age 15-16), Sadie Koch (Female Youth A, 15-16), and Lukas Strauss-Wise (Male Youth C, 11-12). Placing second for BEA were Jack Groh (Male Youth B, 13-14) and Leah Pfeiffer (Female Youth C, 11-12). BEA’s third-place finishers were Ashley Swegel (Female Youth B, 13-14), Owen Jenkins (Male Youth C, 11-12) and Brady Pfeiffer (Male Youth D, 10 and under).

GYMNASTICS

Area gymnasts compete at state — Level 8 gymnast Blaine Davis placed second in the all-around category with his best score of the season to highlight performances by entries from Bend’s Acrovision Sports Center in the 2013 USA Gymnastics men’s Oregon state championships. The meet was held March 16-17 at the Oregon Gymnastics Academy in Beaverton. Davis, competing in the 11-12 age group, placed second in all six events for an all-around score of 68.60. He was one of 13 Acrovision gymnasts to compete in the state meet and is one of eight Acrovision boys to have qualified for regional competition April 5-7 in Helena, Mont. RODEO

Sisters tickets on sale — Tickets are now on sale for the 73rd annual PRCA Sisters Rodeo, scheduled for June 5, and June 7-9 at the Sisters Rodeo grounds. With the addition of Xtreme Bulls on Wednesday, June 5, there are five performances planned for the rodeo. Xtreme Bulls tickets are $15. Prices for the June 7-9 performances range from $12 to $18. Each performance will feature the grand entry, team bronc riding, tie-down roping, bareback riding, steer wrestling, saddle-bronc riding, team roping, bull riding and barrel racing. SKIING

Locals fare well at nationals — Oregon State University—Cascades club sports program athletes were recognized at the recent United States Collegiate Ski and Snowboard Association’s national championships in Sun Valley, Idaho. Freshman nordic skier Sierra Foster took fourth place in the 8 1/2-kilometer classic race, earning All-America honors, and she placed sixth in the 15K skate race, earning second-team All-America honors. She was also named an Academic All-American and second-team All-American for nordic combined. Foster’s classmate Daniel Schuster was one of five alpine skiers to qualify for nationals as an individual, and he also earned Academic All-America honors. OSU-Cascades, located in Bend, partners with the Mt. Bachelor Sports Education Foundation to provide intercollegiate club sports for the university’s students.

TENNIS

Local team wins tourney — The Eagle Crest Raptors, a local men’s senior tennis team, won the BNP Paribas Senior Cup tournament last Thursday in Indian Wells, Calif. Playing in the 3.5-rated Super Senior division for players older than 60, the team won 28 matches and lost just two. The Raptors defeated all nine of their opponents in the three-day qualifying round, and then won the championship by defeating a team from Sacramento, Calif., two matches to one. The team members from Central Oregon consisted of Jim Dority, Mick Black, Joe Tollenaar, Jack VandeWater and Phil McCage. The Raptors were the only team from Oregon in the tournament. Other teams were from British Columbia, Minnesota, Nebraska and Southern California.

RUGBY

Blues lose — The Bend Blues lost to the Valley Rams 38-15 on Saturday in McMinnville. Keegan Bloss scored two tries for the Blues, and Nolan Holmgren added a try. Bend fell to 1-2 in Rugby Oregon’s first division with the loss. Bend hosts North Clackamas on Saturday, April 6, at High Desert Middle School at 11:30 a.m.
