The music business is an amazing thing.

That’s true every day, but today it’s illuminated by the career of Ian McFeron, a Seattle-based singer-songwriter with killer skills, seven albums on his resume, a decade of touring the U.S. and Europe under his belt, and a name that rang zero bells in my head when his show Thursday at The Sound Garden was booked.

Maybe that’s my fault. Maybe I should know this guy by now. Or maybe he’s just a talented dude who has been pushing forward for years, building slowly but steadily and waiting for his big break.

He deserves it. McFeron’s music recalls the classic, sweet-spot folk-rock ‘n’ roll favored by well-known guys like Tom Petty, Ryan Adams, Jackie Greene and — I’ll say it — Bob Dylan. There’s a bit of bluesy twang, some easygoing pop, compelling tales of heartbreak and life on the road, and lots of ‘70s-ish ambiance. But mostly, McFeron excels at the kind of pure rock music that would sound best spinning on your parents’ turntable.

He’ll visit Bend as part of a tour behind his seventh studio album “Time Will Take You,” which will be released on Tuesday. It was produced by Doug Lancio, who has worked with Patty Griffin and John Hiatt and who guided McFeron through a three-day session of recording live using vintage analog gear.
