U.S. ousted — Even an ankle injury couldn’t stop world No. 1 Novak Djokovic from defeating Sam Querrey 7-5, 6-7 (4), 6-1, 6-0 to give Serbia an insurmountable 3-1 lead in a Davis Cup quarterfinal at Taco Bell Arena in Boise, Idaho, on Sunday. “If I wasn’t playing for Serbia, if I didn’t have my teammates’ support, I don’t know if I would’ve played,” Djokovic said. “The first half hour it was very painful.” Serbia advanced to a semifinal in September against Canada, which defeated Italy. The other semifinal will pit defending champion Czech Republic against Argentina in the Czech Republic.

Cancellara wins — Fabian Cancellara of Switzerland edged Sep Vanmarcke in a final sprint to win the Paris-Roubaix cobblestone classic for a third time on Sunday in France. Cancellara was the heavy favorite for the 158-mile race following the withdrawal of Tom Boonen and Peter Sagan. The RadioShack Leopard rider held off Vanmarcke to win in 5 hours, 46 minutes, 13 seconds. It was Cancellara’s third major WorldTour victory in the past three weeks after the E3 Harelbeke event and the Ronde of Flanders.

Winter Classic set — The Winter Classic between the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Detroit Red Wings at Michigan Stadium, canceled this season due to the NHL lockout, has been rescheduled for Jan. 1 next season. When this year’s event was canceled, the league had said it would schedule the next Winter Classic at the stadium, which holds more than 100,000 people. NHL commissioner Gary Bettman made the official announcement confirming next season’s game Sunday before the Red Wings hosted the St. Louis Blues.
