BEAUMONT, Calif. — Bend professional golfer Andrew Vijarro has made the 2013 PGA Tour Canada, a developmental circuit that could lead to the Web.com Tour.
Vijarro completed the darkness-suspended final round of the PGA Tour Canada’s qualifying school Saturday morning with a 1-under-par 71, putting the 23-year-old in a tie for sixth place at 7 under after 72 holes at Morongo Golf Club at Tukwet Canyon.
Only 20 golfers, including Vijarro, out of nearly 300 in the starting field at Q-School earned exempt status on PGA Tour Canada, an important stepping stone toward earning status on the PGA Tour’s main developmental Web.com Tour.
After graduating in June from the University of Oregon, where he was a four-year standout golfer, Vijarro has enjoyed a strong first year in professional golf. In addition to his Q-School success, the Bend High School graduate has earned two second-place finishes on the Gateway Pro Tour, an Arizona-based mini-tour.
This is his biggest step yet, though. The top five golfers on Tour Canada’s Order of Merit at season’s end earn 2014 Web.com Tour cards. The top player from 2013 earns fully exempt status, according to PGA Tour Canada.
PGA Tour Canada begins in June with the Times Colonist Island Savings Open in Victoria, British Columbia, one of eight events on the tour’s schedule.
