Redmond baseball sweeps Summit

REDMOND — Redmond High completed a three-game Class 5A Intermountain Conference baseball sweep of Summit on Wednesday, rallying to knock off the Storm 7-5.

Trailing 4-3 after 41⁄2 innings, the Panthers (11-4 overall, 3-0 5A IMC) scored four times in the bottom of the fifth to take the lead. Trevor Hindman’s RBI single sparked Redmond’s game-changing at-bat, said Panther coach Marc Horner.

Redmond starter Daniel Thomas earned the win, scattering five hits over 5 1⁄3 innings and Cordell McKinney picked up a five-out save.

J.D. Abbas went two for four at the plate for the Panthers, Hindman contributed a one-for-three performance with the big RBI, and Brayden Bordges ended the day one for two with a run scored and a run batted in.

Storm pitcher Tyler Palfrey took the loss as Redmond scored four unearned runs against the senior hurler.

Horner praised the play of the left side of his infield, noting the efforts of Bordges at shortstop and Austin Ontjes at third base.

Erik Alvstad led Summit (6-9, 2-4) at the plate with a double. Tyler Mullen added a one-for-two day in which he scored two runs.

Mountain View 10, Crook County 0: Levi Schlapfer went the distance on the mound and struck out seven as the Cougars claimed the Intermountain Hybrid win in six innings. John Carroll was three for three at the plate with two runs batted in for Mountain View (4-7), and Brock Powell added a two-for-three performance with a double, a triple and an RBI. Derek Ostrom knocked in the game-ending run with a double off the left-field fence with no outs in the sixth inning. Brandon Alexander paced the visiting Cowboys (4-9) by going two for three.

Bend 11, Ridgeview 7: REDMOND — The Lava Bears picked up their third straight win with the Intermountain Hybrid victory to improve to 8-6 overall. Tyler Ross went two for four with a home run and three runs batted in to pace the Ravens (9-5).

SOFTBALL

Panthers sweep Storm: Redmond opened its Intermountain Conference schedule with a pair of convincing wins over host Summit, taking the doubleheader by scores of 6-1 and 14-0. In the opener, Ashley Pesek struck out 14 Summit batters and the Panthers capitalized on seven hits and six Storm errors. Alyssa Nitschelm and Taylor Dockins had two hits apiece for Redmond, and Pesek added a double. Morgan Freeman had two hits for Summit, and Malia Moreland knocked in the Storm’s lone run with a sixth-inning double. In the second game, Marissa Duchi had three hits and drove in two runs to lead the Panthers’ 13-hit attack. Dockins added two hits, Kiahna Brown had two hits, and Nitschelm hit two doubles for the winners (14-2 overall, 2-0 IMC). Aubrey Clemans had a double and a single for Summit (1-13, 0-5).

Cowgirls hand Cougs two losses: Crook County swept host Mountain View in a pair of Intermountain Hybrid contests, topping the Cougars 11-3 in the opener before hanging on to win 5-3 in the second game. The Cowgirls (8-8 overall) took advantage of 10 Mountain View errors in the first contest, scoring nine unearned runs. Jena Ovens and Miranda Smith each knocked in a run for Crook County in the early game. The Cougars (2-13) were more competitive in the late game, but the Cowgirls banged out 11 hits and built an early 3-0 lead. Megan McCadden highlighted the day for Mountain View with a two-run triple in the Cougars’ second loss. Owens, Ashley Bond and Taylor Hilderbrand recorded two hits a piece for Crook County in the final game of the day.

Sisters 4, Cottage Grove 1: COTTAGE GROVE — The Outlaws scored four runs on four hits to win their fifth consecutive Sky-Em League contest. Chawnie Craig posted an RBI single for Sisters and Harley Rowe added a double to lead the Outlaw offense. Sisters ace Cassidy Edwards kept Cottage Grove in check, striking out seven while allowing just one hit over seven innings. The Outlaws are now 6-1 in league and 12-2 overall.

Perrydale 6, Culver 0: AMITY — The Bulldogs were held to just four hits in their Class 2A/1A Special District 3 loss to the Pirates. Josi Harrison, Ashley Wilda, Sabrina Navarro and Sara McKinney each picked up a hit for Culver (3-14 overall, 2-3 SD3), but Perrydale jumped out to a 5-0 lead with a second-inning run bookended by two runs in both the first and third innings.

GIRLS GOLF

Summit takes tourney: The Storm’s Madison Odiorne fired a 5-over-par 77 at Tetherow Golf Club to lead Summit to a first-place finish with an overall score of 336 at the Bend/Summit Links Challenge. Sarah Heinly and Megan Mitchell joined their teammate in the top three with scores of 82 and 84, respectively. Bend took second with a 395, led by Heidi Froelich’s fourth-place 87 and Madeline Rice’s fifth-place 90.

TRACK AND FIELD

Renault paces Buffs: MOLALLA — Elle Renault claimed wins in the pole vault and javelin while taking second in the long jump to lead the Madras girls at the three-team Tri-Valley Conference meet at Heckard Field. Team scores were not available. The White Buffaloes boasted four winners on the boys’ side: Joe Hisatake (100-meter dash), Jhaylen Yeahquo (1,500), Brandon Hawes (3,000) and Isaac Fisher (pole vault).

Bend boys, girls defeat Ridgeview: Braden Bell set personal records in the 100- and 200-meter dashes in leading the Lava Bears to a win over the Ravens in the boys’ dual meet. Scores were not available. Bend’s Joel Johnson added victories in the pole vault and javelin, setting a personal best in the latter event. Landon Prescott (800-meter run), Zachary Taylor (110-meter hurdles) and Phelan Lund (shot put) picked up wins for the Ravens. On the girls’ side, Macey Burgess and Sarah Curran won the 400 and 800, respectively, to propel Bend to a win over Ridgeview. The Ravens were led by Reid Stroup’s first-place showing in the 200 and McKenzie Hidalgo’s victory in the shot put.

Panthers, Storm split dual: REDMOND — Kyle Tinnell won the 200-meter dash and long jump to help Redmond accumulate 83 1⁄2 points, defeating two-time defending Class 5A state champion Summit, which had 60 1⁄2. The Panthers went 1-2-3 in the shot put and 300-meter hurdles, with Josue Nieves taking the shot and John Hickey winning the 300 hurdles. The Storm were led by Grant Parton (800-meter run) and Matthew Sjogren (3,000), who each set personal bests in their respective events. Summit took the win in the girls’ meet, defeating the Panthers 108-34. Josie Kinney took first in the 400 and the 300 hurdles for the Storm, and Mercedes Mingus did the same in the discus and javelin. Kendall Current led Redmond with a win in the 100. Tefna Mitchell-Hoegh posted a victory in the 800, and Cheyenne Tinnell won the shot put.

Boys lacrosse

Summit 8, Bend 7: The Lava Bears took a 4-3 lead into halftime, but five third-quarter goals gave the Storm an 8-5 advantage heading into the fourth quarter. Summit then held off visiting Bend High to earn the High Desert league win. Dylan Smith and Quinn Rasmussen led the Storm (6-5 overall, 3-0 HD) with two goals apiece. Bend (6-4, 3-1) was paced by Eli Pite’s three goals, and James Rockett added two.
