Samuel Howard Swaim

Sam was born in Prineville, Oregon, the oldest son of Howard Finch and Celia Mary Lytle Swaim.
Upon his fathers return from World War II, the family moved to Bend. After graduating from Bend High School, he attended Central Oregon Community College, Portland State, and the University of Oregon, earning a BA and masters degree in counseling psychology.
Sam worked as a Counselor for agencies in Tillamook, Portland, Seaside, Madras, and Prineville, specializing in drug and alcohol rehabilitation. A gifted musician who studied piano from an early age he was also an accomplished vocalist and guitar player. In 2003, a CD of his original piano compositions, ”For the Mending of Hearts” was released.
On March 21, he passed away at St. Charles Hospital in Bend from complications of heart disease and diabetes.
He is survived by his son, Jeremy Samuel Swaim of Butte, Montana; brother, Philip Dean Swaim (Sheila) of Mosier; and sister, Mary Ellen Swaim of Oregon City. He is also survived by his step-father, Ray Doty of The Dalles; and step-siblings, Estlie Doty, Denice (Keith) Henshaw, and Ray Doty; as well as nieces, nephews, and many close friends.
He was preceded in death by his father, mother, brother, Thomas Earl; and step-sister, Sherry Doty.
A memorial service will be held at Rock Arbor Villa, Williamson Hall, 200 NE Highway 20, in Bend on Saturday, April 27, 2013, at 1:00 p.m.
