Missing teenager — An Oregon sheriff says he’s getting reports that a missing Oklahoma teen has been sighted in various places around the Northwest. However, Harney County Sheriff Dave Glerup says none of those reports have led to 19-year-old Dustin Self. The teen reportedly set out more than a month ago from the family home outside Oklahoma City to test himself against the wilderness. His pickup truck was found April 15 on rugged Steens Mountain in southeastern Oregon. Self’s parents are taking the vehicle back home. The Oregonian reports that Glerup said Monday his office has gotten sighting reports from places including Yakima, Wash., and Lakeview, Grants Pass and Coos Bay in Oregon. The sheriff has suspended the day-to-day search of the Steens Mountain area because of continuing stormy conditions and deep snow. A helicopter search last week found no sign of Self. Glerup has said he thinks Self is either dead or walked off the mountain and hitched a ride somewhere.
Motel standoff — After a four-hour standoff Monday morning, police used an explosive charge and tear gas to flush a man wanted for parole violations from a southeast Portland motel room. Police said 57-year-old Terry Glenn Mortensen was wanted for violating parole in a 1977 Nevada homicide and in a 2003 assault in Washington state. Negotiators talked to him for two hours before dawn, but he refused to leave his room at a Motel 6. When officers used the explosive to blow the door to the room off its hinges, Mortensen sprayed a liquid from the bathroom and started a fire, said a police spokesman, Sgt. Pete Simpson. Then, he threw knives and a hatchet out the door toward an armored vehicle, “which obviously had no effect,” Simpson said. Officers broke windows and fired tear gas inside. Mortensen was arrested when he tried to crawl out a window. He was taken to the hospital for minor injuries.
Estacada standoff — Authorities say a burglary suspect used his 7-month-old son as a shield during a police standoff in Estacada. The Clackamas County sheriff’s office says deputies were trying to arrest Raleigh Reynolds on Saturday when he ran from his house, jumped a fence and tried to hide at his sister’s house next door. When Reynolds finally came outside, deputies say he tried to use his infant son as a shield. KGW reports the baby was not hurt. Reynolds eventually surrendered. He was jailed on charges of burglary, endangering a minor and resisting arrest. Reynolds also was arrested in February on drug charges after he inadvertently dialed 911 just before a drug deal.
Officer arrested — A Beaverton police officer is accused of lying to obtain public assistance, including food stamps. The Washington County sheriff’s office says Officer Christopher Warren turned himself in Friday. The Oregonian reports that Warren faces charges of theft, unlawfully obtaining public assistance and unlawfully using food stamps. Warren is scheduled to appear in court April 30.
Seaside killings — A 50-year-old Seaside man has been sentenced to two consecutive life prison terms for killing his ex-wife and her male friend in May 2012. The Oregonian reports that the Circuit Court sentence imposed Monday on Marcus Glenn Foster includes the possibility of parole. Foster pleaded guilty last month to two counts of first-degree aggravated murder. Seaside police say Laura Foster and Guy Phillips were beaten to death with a baseball bat May 3 at her house.
