Firefighters plan to light a prescribed fire today south of Bend, putting up smoke visible from town.

The fire will be along China Hat Road near Horse Butte and the Woodside Ranch subdivision, said Kevin Stock, assistant fire management officer for the Bend-Fort Rock District of the Deschutes National Forest. The fire may cover as much as 400 acres.

Burning will likely start at 11 a.m., Stock said, and be finished later today.
