- Burning season's here
Type I burn boss Rod Bonacker of the Deschutes National Forest moves along the edge of a prescribed burn Tuesday south of Bend.
A part of the South Bend Hazardous Fuels Reduction Project, the daylong burn located off China Hat Road between the forest boundary and Horse Butte had the goal of reducing fuels near where subdivisions and forest meet, said Kevin Stock, assistant fire management officer for the Bend-Fort Rock Ranger District.
Firefighters burned 213 acres out of 400 acres in the project, he said, and may burn more Thursday and Friday if weather is favorable. Stock said no burning is planned for today because winds would blow smoke toward town.
