VALE — Ridgeview coach Tim Miller knew he had a solid group of players coming out for the Ravens’ inaugural girls tennis season. All he was worried about was their inexperience.
Now, Ridgeview stands as district champion.
With three singles players advancing to the semifinals and two doubles teams following suit, and with the Ravens going 2-3-4 in the final singles standings, Ridgeview wrapped up the Class 4A/3A/2A/1A Special District 5 tournament on Friday as the district champion.
“Put it into perspective, it shows the quality of our team,” Miller said. “We were willing to play, and they played lights out this season.”
Vale was second in the team standings, and Crook County took third.
Sally Claridge defeated teammate Bailey Simmons in the semifinals before falling to Crook County’s Elsa Harris in the singles championship 6-1, 6-1. Caitlin Carr finished third overall with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Simmons in the third-place matchup.
In the doubles bracket, Claire Wright and Kourtney Wellette went as far as the championship final but fell to a Vale tandem in straight sets to take second. Rhian Sage and Makena Jordison, who lost in the semifinals, dropped their third-place match to a La Grande duo.
Harris will represent the Cowgirls at the state championships next week at the University of Oregon. Seven Ravens will also make the trip in hopes of adding to the team’s already memorable season.
“We’ve got to get some rest,” Miller said. “We’ve got to revamp ourselves again and get after it again.”
