Invasive species checkpoint — An Eastern Oregon checkpoint aimed at keeping invasive species from hitchhiking into Oregon on boats has opened for the spring, and it found an infested boat the next day. The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife says about 50 small quagga mussels were on the outboard motor of a boat being returned last week from Lake Mead. The Ontario Argus Observer reports the boat was decontaminated with a high-pressure, hot-water cleaning. The state operates checkpoints at Ashland, Lakeview and Ontario. Last year, it reported disinfecting 51 boats.

Portland police chief — Portland Police Chief Mike Reese was asked to cut down on department overtime and he’s doing something about it. The chief is leaving his 15th floor office at the Justice Center office to fill vacant shifts. The Oregonian reports he assigned himself three patrol shifts this week in downtown Portland. The shifts were vacant because officers have been sent for additional training with the bureau’s new Enhanced Crisis Intervention Team.

Aloha house fire — An 11-year-old boy and his parents have been rescued from a burning town home in Aloha and sent to the hospital. KGW-TV reported the mother was alert and talking Thursday morning, and the father and child required CPR. Firefighters say it appeared the fire started in the garage, and fire and smoke trapped the family. Firefighters were investigating to determine the cause.
