EUGENE — Summit’s distance runners are at it again.
Storm freshman Hannah Gindlesperger won the girls 3,000 meters Friday and her teammates Matthew Maton and Eric Alldritt went 1-2 in the boys 3K to highlight the first day of the Class 5A state track and field championships at the University of Oregon’s Hayward Field.
Maton’s time of 8 minutes, 28.62 seconds shattered the old 5A state-meet record of 8:39.00, as did Alldritt’s 8:35.78.
“He just destroyed the field,” Summit coach Dave Turnbull said about Maton. “(He) really put on a burst of speed. He definitely set up the day we had.”
The six-time defending state champion Summit girls ended the first day of the meet in first place with 23 1⁄2 points. Dani Taylor placed second in the high jump, Jade Danek added a sixth-place finish in the same event, and Mercedes Mingus placed fifth in the javelin for the Storm.
“Our kids are digging their heels in,” Turnbull said about his girls program and its quest to win seven straight state titles. “They don’t want to give up that trophy.”
The Summit boys sit in second place at the start of today’s events with 18 points, five back of first-day leader Hermiston (23 points). Individually among Central Oregon entries, Mountain View’s Mitch Modin placed second in the long jump and Redmond’s Gabe Giacci took third in the discus.
In the 4A team standings, the La Pine boys, the 2012 state champs, are tied for second place with Seaside with 18 points. Siuslaw ended the opening day with 29 points. For La Pine, freshman Justin Petz won the pole vault by clearing 14 feet and Jeremy Desrosiers was the runner-up in the long jump.
Ridgeview and Crook County shined during the first day of the 4A girls competition. The two teams are tied for seventh place with 10 points each. Elmira and Gladstone are tied atop the 4A girls standings, both with 15 points. Raven freshman Hosanna Wilder won the high jump with a mark of 5-3, while the Cowgirls’ Laken Berlin placed third in the long jump and Hannah Troutman finished fifth in the javelin.
The Class 6A, 5A and 4A state championships conclude today at Hayward Field.
