Madras police are investigating the shooting Monday of a 29-year-old city resident, according to police.

Police and Jefferson County sheriff’s deputies responding to a noon shooting call found Roberto Cortez inside a home at 469 S.E. Ninth St.

Police Detective Mel Brown declined to release further details, citing an ongoing investigation.

“We did determine there’s no danger to the public,” he said Wednesday. “The victim shot was the intended target.”

Cortez, treated first at St. Charles Madras and then moved to an undisclosed hospital, is “doing well,” Brown said. The gunshot wound was not life threatening, according to police.

No suspect has been identified, Brown said. He said Cortez “had absolutely no idea” why he was shot or by whom.

Police ask that anyone with information contact Brown at 541-475-2424.
