Basketball

Local player an AAU champion – Bend’s Noah Cheney and his team, the Oregon Heat 15U, won the Boys 9th Level 2 Blue division of the Jam On It Amateur Athletic Union basketball tournament, held May 25-27 in Reno, Nev. The team, based in Corvallis and composed of players from around the state, competed in the second-highest division in the tournament. Cheney is a freshman at Mountain View High School.

Nordic Skiing

Two local skiers receive awards – Dakota Blackhorse von Jess and Pat Madden, both skiers with the Bend Endurance Academy, were recognized recently by the Pacific Northwest Ski Association. Blackhorse von Jess, 26 and of Bend, won the Olav Uland Award for outstanding nordic competitor. He is the reigning U.S. Cross Country men’s skate sprint champion. Madden, 21 and a former Bend resident who competes on the Montana State University nordic ski team, was recognized as outstanding male nordic collegiate skier by the association.

Track and Field

Bend vaulter wins youth track meet – Trey Bracelin, a sophomore at Summit High School, recently won the Intermediate Boys (ages 15-16) pole vault competition at the Portland Track Festival Bowerman Athletic Club youth track meet, held in Hillsboro on June 2. Bracelin, 15 and of Bend, competes for Summit High but entered the meet unattached. He finished first of two athletes in his division at the USA Track and Field-sanctioned event with a vault of 12 feet.
