Johnson released from jail — A contrite Chad Johnson apologized Monday for disrespecting a judge when the former NFL star slapped his attorney on the backside in court last week, and his immediate release from jail was ordered. Broward County Circuit Judge Kathleen McHugh accepted Johnson’s apology and cut his 30-day jail term for a probation violation to the seven days he had already served since the rear-swatting incident. Johnson, a flamboyant wide receiver formerly known as Chad Ochocinco, said in court that he had time to think about why his flippant attitude was wrong — especially in a domestic violence case. “I just wanted to apologize for disrespecting the court last time,” said Johnson, wearing a tan jail jumpsuit with his hands shackled at the waist. “I apologize. I did have time to reflect on the mistakes I made in this courtroom.”

Nuggets hire GM — The Denver Nuggets have settled on a general manager. Now, they can concentrate on finding a new coach. The team announced Monday that Tim Connelly will take over for Masai Ujiri, who left to become general manager of the Toronto Raptors. Connelly’s official title with the team will be executive vice president of basketball operations. Connelly is considered a rising front office talent, much like Ujiri when he first joined the Nuggets. The 36-year-old Connelly has been serving as the assistant GM with the New Orleans Pelicans since 2010, with his responsibilities including draft preparation, trade negotiations and player contracts. His first order of business with the Nuggets will be finding a replacement for George Karl after the longtime coach was fired nearly two weeks ago.

Man hurt in Baltimore moves to rehab — A Maryland man hurt in a fight during a Baltimore Orioles game last month has moved to a rehab facility, and his lawyers said Monday they are looking for anyone who may have witnessed the exchange. The family of 25-year-old Matthew Fortese, a doctor who treated him and his lawyers held a news conference Monday in Baltimore. The doctor said Fortese has moved to an in-patient rehabilitation facility and is working with physical, occupational and speech therapists. Fortese’s brother, Jimmy Fortese, said his brother is learning again how to talk. Police say Fortese was punched in the head and fell off a 5-foot wall onto a concrete walkway while attending a May 29 Orioles home game against the Washington Nationals.
Little League gets first woman as board chair — Little League Baseball has a woman leading its Board of Directors decades after girls were first officially allowed to play ball. Davie Jane Gilmour, president of the Pennsylvania College of Technology, took over as chair in November. She took part in one of her first responsibilities connected to the Little League World Series after drawing team names last week to set up the opening matchups for the tournament that starts in August. Girls were first formally allowed to play Little League baseball in 1974.
