Bike lock prompts Bend library noon time scare

A metal bike lock shaped like a grenade prompted Bend police to evacuate the Deschutes County library on Wall Street and close off a square block for a half hour today.
The block between Louisiana and Kansas avenues along with the library was closed between 11:40 a.m. and 12:10 p.m.
A woman found the lock in bushes on the building west side and moved it to an outside trash can, then reported the find to Bend police. A police officer inspected the lock in the trash can, then called an explosives expert.
He determined the device was actually a bike lock that resembled a grendade and sounded the all clear.
