Emergency landing — A small plane made an emergency landing on Interstate 5 in southern Oregon after losing power on its way to Portland. State police say there were no injuries Wednesday when the four-seat Cessna landed north of Roseburg. The pilot was identified as 38-year-old Marc Girardet of Tenmile and he had a 56-year-old passenger. Investigators say the plane was about 20 minutes into its flight from Roseburg to Portland when the problem arose. Girardet tried to return to Roseburg, but had to make the emergency stop on the freeway. He safely steered the plane to the center median.
Gunpowder sparked — Authorities in Pendleton say two people were burned when a man helping a neighbor used a hand-held grinder to cut through the padlock on the door to a garage where ammunition had once been loaded. Both were in a burn center in Portland. The garage suffered major damage. The adjoining home had smoke damage.
Gay marriage push — Organizers of the effort to make same-sex marriage legal in Oregon say they will start collecting petition signatures Friday. Volunteers in more than a dozen Oregon cities are expected to pick up petitions and ask registered voters for their signatures. It will take 116,000 valid signatures for the initiative to make the November 2014 ballot. In 2004, voters by a margin of 57 percent to 43 percent voted to amend the Oregon constitution to define marriage as a union between one man and one woman. Since then, same-sex marriage has become legal in neighboring California and Washington. Organizers hope that’s a sign that Oregonians are ready to reverse the ban.
Multnomah affair: she’s out — Although the leader of Multnomah County government says he won’t quit because of an 18-month affair with an employee, the woman is now out of a job. A county spokesman released a “separation agreement” with Sonia Manhas on Wednesday that makes her resignation effective Aug. 30. She is the health policy adviser whose affair with County Commissioner Chairman Jeff Cogen was revealed last week. He returned to work Monday vowing not to quit. The county didn’t explain why the agreement was sought, or by whom. It was signed by Manhas and a county lawyer.
