Bend police linked a 15-year-old boy smoking marijuana and lighting fireworks to a brush fire July 19 near Farewell Bend Park, according to a police spokesman this morning.
Police contacted a second boy and are looking for two more connected with the incident, according to Lt. Chris Carney.
The unnamed boy was referred to Deschutes County juvenile authorities, along with charges of reckless burning, reckless endangering, carrying a concealed weapon and possession of marijuana within 1,000 feet of a school.
According to Carney:
Several witnesses saw four boys flee a spot along the Deschutes River Trail opposite the park as a brush fire started along the cliff face. The four were reportedly smoking marijuana. Police contacted one of the four, who admitted lighting fireworks that started the fire. All four fled the area without notifying anyone of the fire.
Carney stated police found a dagger on the boy when he was interviewed.
