Fly-tying corner

There are more than 200 insects for every type of land bird in the land Down Under. Some of the flies are downright annoying, and it is always a pleasure to watch a trout sip one from the surface of a lake.
The Shoo Fly is a New Zealand favorite for exploring still waters. Its wings are prominent, durable and lend to a crunchy profile. Tie one on when exploring lakes or ponds when you might otherwise use a Royal Coachman or a Beetle.
Tie this fly on a No. 12-14 dry fly hook. For the tail, use scarlet hackle fibers. Build the body with peacock herl. For the wings, use veined plastic or Swiss Straw. Finish with a Rhode Island red hackle.
