“PLANES”

Rating: PG for some mild action and rude humor.

Most Popular

What it’s about: The kid attractor factor: It’s a Disney film set in Pixar’s “Cars” universe — talking, flirting, wisecracking aircraft.

Good lessons/bad lessons: You can be more than you were designed to be.

Violence: A World War II recreation sequence. Nothing graphic.

Language: Disney clean.

Sex: A little Latin lover flirtation.

Drugs: None.

Parents’ advisory: A toy commercial aimed at the VERY young. Suitable for all ages.

“ELYSIUM”

Rating: R for strong bloody violence and language throughout.

What it’s about: In the future, the very rich have moved off Earth and restrict access to clean air, nature and health care while the Earth has become a crowded, almost unlivable Third World planet.

The kid attractor factor: Sci-fi action, stuff blowing up and Matt Damon dressed in an exo-skeleton.

Good lessons/bad lessons: Helping others is what gives us our humanity.

Violence: Lots of it, and quite graphic.

Language: Some profanity.

Sex: None.

Drugs: Pot is still smoked 100-plus years from now.

Parents’ advisory: Sci-fi in the “District 9” mold — quite bloody and violent. Suitable for 15 and older.

“THE SMURFS 2”

Rating: PG for some rude humor and action.

What it’s about: More Smurf visits to the Real World — Paris, this time — to foil the wizard Gargamel’s plans to steal Smurf Essence.

The kid attractor factor: Smurfs, doing Smurf slapstick, Smurf singing, Smurf punning.

Good lessons/bad lessons: “We rise to the amount of love we show,” “It doesn’t matter where you came from; what matters is who you choose to be,” and “You never give up on family.”

Violence: Pratfalls and slapstick, most of it involving a wizard and his cat.

Language: Smurf innuendo, Smurf jokes.

Sex: Smurf flirting, and not much of that.

Drugs: None.

Parents’ advisory: Aimed at very young children. Suitable for all ages.

This guide, compiled by Orlando Sentinel film critic Roger Moore, is published here every Friday. It should be used with the MPAA rating system for selecting movies suitable for children. Films rated G, PG or PG-13 are included, along with R-rated films that may have entertainment or educational value for older children with parental guidance.
