A man who allegedly brandished a gun at Oregon State Police troopers and led them on a chase along U.S. Highway 20 from Suttle Lake to a gravel road southeast of Sisters is dead.

According to a news release from the Oregon State Police, around 11:50 a.m. police stopped a vehicle traveling eastbound after a driving complaint. During the stop, the driver pointed a firearm at the trooper, then fled eastbound.

Troopers pursued the man, and deployed spike strips near Sisters, but the man left the highway and traveled onto Harrington Loop Road south of Sisters.

An OSP senior trooper wedged the man’s vehicle between two patrol cars, stopping the fleeing car.

According to police, the man then displayed his gun again and two OSP troopers fired shots. The man was found dead inside the vehicle.

It is too early to determine whether the man died as a result of shots fired by the police, according to the release.

The driver’s name has not yet been released, nor have the names of the officers involved in the shooting. Both are veteran officers of the force, and neither were injured in the incident.

An investigation led by Bend Police is ongoing.
