Deaths of note from around the world:
Henry Putzel, 99: Civil rights lawyer during the era of U.S. Supreme Court-ordered desegregation who later worked as the “reporter of decisions” for the high court, editing and polishing its rulings and opinions. Died Sept. 2 at his home in Peterborough, N.H.
Barbara Coe, 79: Activist who helped lead the grass-roots movement behind a controversial 1994 California ballot initiative to deny those in the country illegally access to basic public services, which she used as a springboard to become a national advocate against illegal immigration. Died Saturday at her home in California.
Frank Martinez, 89: Muralist and painter whose humility and quiet style escaped widespread recognition but whose work was revered by a generation of Chicano artists in Los Angeles. Died Aug. 17 in Los Angeles.
