Nibali keeps lead over Horner — Warren Barguil of France won the mountainous 16th stage of the Spanish Vuelta on Monday in Spain, timing his final sprint up the steep Aramon Formigal peak. Vincenzo Nibali of Italy fended off rival Chris Horner of Bend to keep the overall lead. Barguil, a 21-year-old rider for Argos-Shimano, finished in 3 hours, 43 minutes, 31 seconds. He was just ahead of Rigoberto Uran of Colombia, who had the same time. Nibali lost time on the final ascent to Horner but remained in the overall lead, 28 seconds ahead of the American. The race resumes after a day’s rest with the 17th stage on Wednesday, a 117-mile ride from Calahorra to Burgos.

Newman hired by RCR — Ryan Newman was hired Monday by Richard Childress Racing to drive the No. 31 Chevrolet next season. Newman, a 17-race winner, will replace Jeff Burton, who announced last week he is leaving RCR at the end of the season. Luke Lambert will remain with the team as crew chief, and Caterpillar was the only sponsor announced for the program Monday. Burton said in announcing his departure the CAT funding wasn’t enough to run a proper program in 2014, and it’s assumed Newman has additional backing to add to the deal.

Hernandez start pushed back — Seattle Mariners ace Felix Hernandez will not make his scheduled start on Wednesday, the second time his turn in the rotation has been pushed back. The team confirmed Monday that Hernandez will not start against Houston. He was originally scheduled to start last Sunday against Tampa Bay, but had that start pushed back due to stiffness in his back. Hernandez left his start on Sept. 2 against Kansas City due to cramps in his lower back.
